Narrative
A cantor in crisis of faith is turned upside down when his elementary school music teacher enters his life as a new adult Bat Mitzvah student. This Hebrew "Tikkun Olam" meaning “Repair the world”. While being picked up at the bar, Benny finishes his mudslide and noisily places the empty glass on the bar counter. From the big boy’s perspective, the mudslide in front of Benny is full of hall.

The first, and really only, thing you need to know about this movie before seeing it is that it’s a straightforward homage to 70s filmmaking.
Or at least you shouldn’t hate it
That said, there are certain camera choices and character behaviors that don’t bother you in the least if you’re in the era of filmmaking. However, if you don’t know the genre or hate it, this is not the movie for you. The last film I saw in this retro style was the 2023 Paul Giamatti film The Holdovers. If you liked the movie, you’ll probably like this one too.
What is a bat mitzvah?
Among the Temples tells the story of a cantor who clearly needs a psychologist, but who everyone seems to think just needs to get laid. One day, he meets his former music teacher, who wants to return to his Jewish roots and receive a bat mitzvah. Think of it as a coming-of-age party. But honestly, you don’t need to know anything about Judaism to understand what’s going on here.
Everything is realistic, but awkward as hell
Since the movies, the only true religion is cramping. There are some scenes that are absolutely cringe-inducing from start to finish. This is a small film with a small heart that should be enjoyed by those in their right mind.
