It’s frustrating to watch a film that seems to be on a certain trajectory, but keeps ROLLING along the way to get there. That’s exactly what happens in this era of coming out/coming of age story set in 1938 Italy.
For that reason, it’s the kind of film that will leave many viewers scratching their heads and asking: What’s the point of all this?
Writer-director Laura Luchetti’s adaptation of Cesare Pavese’s 1949 novel about an impressionable 17-year-old seamstress (Yile Yara Vianello) who falls romantically in love with an art model (Deva Cassel) has its own sweet time (and plenty of lengthy detours) on the way to a seemingly predetermined conclusion. But while this offering clearly approaches its goal, it takes an unexpected left turn again, leading to a conclusion that the filmmaker himself admits is intentionally ambiguous.
As a result, any noble intentions that may have been behind the production’s creation are significantly blurred in the final cut
The film is supposedly meant to address a subject that was considered taboo at the time the story and book were written, but that goal isn’t fulfilled nearly as clearly as it could have been. There are also a few passing references to the fascist socio-political conditions of the time (elements not included in the source material), but they’re never fleshed out much, so their inclusion would seem like an afterthought.
Luchetti’s third feature-length outing really needs a lot of tweaking to make it work, because it doesn’t work in its current form
To its credit, "A Beautiful Summer" It has great cinematography, well-chosen locations that showcase the beauty of Turin, and a haunting soundtrack, but if those qualities are the best that can be said about the film, it doesn’t say much about the picture as a whole.
